Building a kitchen island. Apply a bead of wood glue along the top, bottom and side edges on the backside of one cabinet. Fit the cabinets together so their sides and tops are perfectly aligned. Clamp the cabinets together at the top. Drill pilot holes and fasten the cabinets together with wood screws about 3/4 inch below their top edges.

Extend a kitchen island with legs. Add a cantilever countertop. Install an open waterfall countertop. Install additional base cabinetry with a new island top. DIY an end cap with shelving (Can also be done with existing countertops by using butcher block or another top for this addition.)
